BlackWater Revue
The formerly known Shatterpoint are back.
They are back as BlackWater Revue; the four-piece from Kent with a heavy blues/hard rock sound. Influenced by everything from Jim Morrison and the allure of The Doors, the innovation of Led Zeppelin to even the sludge of Black Label Society, BlackWater Revue say they have got to be heard. Writing songs based on life experiences, they have a genuine feel. They have an honesty about them and the "wealth of musical material" that is at their disposal transcends into something vastly creative and entertaining.
As with any new start, it's a slow progress, but with more gigs, more songs and more fans as the weeks go by, BlackWater Revue are heading in the right direction. With an exclusive look at some 35mm studio shots, I spoke to front-man, Ed Stone, and drummer, Tom Harrison.
So, where did the name BlackWater Revue come from?
Tom Harrison: I'm not too sure how we finally decided on this name, it seemed to have been mentioned as an idea and it kind of just stuck
Ed Stone: Well, after hours of coming up with new names, the boys arrived at "Blackened Waters" - I turned around and said, "What about BlackWater Revue?". I liked the idea of travelling sideshows and saw it as a sort of statement of intent. We want to take our "show" all over. The boys liked it and here we are [laughs].
How has the "new name, new start" ethos been working out so far then?
ES: On one hand it has been really refreshing to write new material with a different approach to sound, seeing our old fans enjoy the new material, and open ourselves up to a wider audience. But on the other hand, it has become more of a slow-burner than a supernova as we all have other commitments that we must try to honour first. When that is all aside, there will be no stopping us.

What are your plans for this year, both as a band and individually?
TH: This year we plan to gig as much as possible so we can promote the new name and our new tracks; hopefully with a summer tour? And of course get a debut EP out there there we can think about an album
ES: As a band we want to get our new songs recorded, release an EP at some point and to tour or get involved with some kind of festival. Personally, as I said before, it's shaping up to be an eventful year. My passion outside of the band is Art and Design. I've got a degree in Graphic Design and Visual Communication but I'm working full time as a chef. The hours are long, late and debilitating which is creatively stifling, although I do sneak the odd writing session in on my breakfast shifts. To become a full time artist/designer by day and front man by night is the time.

Where do you feel your creative inspiration comes from?
TH: Drum and bass to blues, any sort of beat can kick start an idea.
ES: It comes at the most unsociable of hours. Fortunately, I keep a notebook on me most of the time or I use my phone. I'd say I'm inspired by my friends & family, loved ones & lost ones and the music I both love and hate.
How do you set out to write new material?
ES: Generally we fit the songs together like a puzzle. It often starts with me coming into practice with a vocal hook or Mark [Graham, guitarist] with a riff or a melody. Then it evolves and we work with it until we're happy. We bounce off of each other.
TH: Yeah, we have always been able to write songs with the same amount of effort as it takes to write your name! I believe it comes naturally to us, it always has. There has never been a set plan on how to write a BlackWater Revue song.
What has been the defining point of being in a band for you?
TH: Recording the album and getting it printed has to be the major defining highlight for me in the band. To have a physical copy of your own efforts is brilliant!
ES: While it's still early days for the Revue, the highlight overall has to be shooting the music video for "Trainwreck", we shot it all in one day and it still looks awesome. Jim Cross did a fantastic job and the rest of the crew were brilliant, you can watch it here:
Are you working on anything at the moment?
TH: We have just finished writing a song at our last band practice, just a bit of touching up and then onto the next one.
Could you describe a typical BlackWater Revue band practice?
ES: We rehearse, we work on new songs, the we piss about. It's supposed to be a laugh after all. I just feel bad for Joe [Green, bassist] sometimes, the things he has to put up with!
TH: Essentially it's 30 minutes practice, 30 minutes insulting one and other, and then 2 hours messing about.
Keeping the "new name, new start" ethos in mind, are you heading in a new direction musically?
TH: We're heading into a more rockier, bluesy feel compared to Shatterpoint, which had elements of metal throughout.
ES: Well yeah, I'd say we are. The vibe is a lot more positive now. It's more about having a good time and I'd say there is a lot more soul to the sound. We still haven't had that eureka moment where we think "YES! That's how we should sound!" It's fun to not be pigeon holed into one thing, it could end up getting a little stale. At the moment you can hear instances of post-rock, soul, the blues and then we'll hit you with a straight up classic rock groove. It's becoming a real good-time sound.
It's sounding like you know what you want, so finally, describe the band in five words.
ES: I'll be cheeky and say, REAL MUSIC WORTH LISTENING TO.
TH: Large Big Tasty With Bacon.
A lovely choice of words from Tom Harrison, we wouldn't expect anything less.
BlackWater Revue are set on broadening their horizons and seeing what life brings to the table, and that's a fine moral to live by. The Indieannas
Buxton indie-guitar rock band, The Indieannas, are new on the scene and have since released "Moneyman" [video below], their first single and video, with exceptional praise. It is known than many an Indieanna piece is created with pure drive and determination, and no budget.
The indie revival seems in full swing at the moment, with the likes of Jake Bugg and Alt-J making a huge impact, we can only hope for the same with this enticing quartet...

After NOCTIS spoke to manager Paul White, bassist Mark Whibberley answered a few questions we had to find out a little bit more about The Indieannas. See what he had to say here,

We also hope our upcoming debut EP "Flying High" which is released on February 11th with "Money Man" will get us noticed and hopefully with the support of people like yourself we can bag support slots with some great names. We just want people to hear us and listen to what we have to say through our music.

Peace: "Music to Fuck you in the Heart"
Following in the footsteps of many, PEACE are the most recent ensemble to step out of Birmingham, UK.
Having gained interest in early 2012 from publication giants The Guardian and NME; PEACE have been compared to indie loves, The Maccabees, Foals and Vampire Weekend. They released their debut EP, "EP Delicious", through Columbia Records early in September 2012
Peace formed late 2011; in an interview with singer Harrison Koisser, it became clear the band was formed out of boredom and the name derived from inspiration found in a celebratory photograph from the end of World War Two. How patriotic.
After the release of the first song, entitled "Bblood", the NME added PEACE to their list of bands to watch in 2012. We see no reason why this can't continue in 2013.. The über cool quartet show no signs of wavering, and are hailed as "the future of indie" by The Guardian. In April 2012 the band released their debut single "Follow Baby" and toured with the likes of Mystery Jets and The Vaccines.
December 10th saw the release of the music video for their latest single "Wraith", now available for download through itunes

Reading and Leeds Festival
Alt-J, Deftones, Sub Focus and Boy Better Know are the first to be confirmed for next years Reading and Leeds Fest, alongside an announcement of an expanded 3 day dance area and a new Hip Hop & Grime stage.
Reading and Leeds Festival returns on Friday 23rd August - Sunday 25th August 2013 at Richfield Avenue, Reading and Bramham Park, Leeds.
The biggest dual-site festivals in Britain are set to be bigger and better than ever, with additional stages, an updated new look, and of course the all-important line-up. The festivals will remain the best choice for music lovers and in 2013 will boast more genres of music than ever before. Festival boss Melvin Benn has been planning these exciting changes and additions to the festivals over the past year, refining and expanding their proposition for the fans:
“This is a dynamic time for the festivals. Not only do we have a fresh look for next year, but we are also adding to the fans’ experience of the festival with the introduction of more stages and genres of music, which also inevitably means an increase in the number of artists playing across the weekend.
The Reading & Leeds festival goers listen to a diverse range of music and with the likes of BBC Radio 1 offering specialist shows focused on rock and dance and BBC Radio 1Xtra - now a station in its own right - this broad spectrum of musical genres reflects what the fans are into and what Reading & Leeds represents. I’m really thrilled about the additions we have planned and I’m committed to ensuring Reading & Leeds remain the highlight of the festival season for many years to come.”
There are some exciting changes to be made to the festival, plus ticket details and a limited period for a £50 deposit scheme. For now, you can whet your appetite with some of the first acts announced.
The iconic alternative rock band, Deftones. As legendary figures in west-coast rock 'n' roll, they have sold over four million records worldwide. Today, they are cited as an inspiration by the likes of Museand Biffy Clyro. The way their sound has evolved from 90’s metal to expansive noise rock has put them in a league of their own, but expect to hear plenty from their seven-album career including material from their critically acclaimed new record ‘Koi No Yokan’.
Deftones commented:
"We are thrilled to be returning to reading and Leeds. In previous years it’s always been a highlight for us and we are honoured to have been invited back."
An NME favourite, Alt-J, will take to the top of the bill on the NME/Radio 1 Stage. 2012 has seen Alt-J go from virtual unknowns to the hottest new band in Britain. Alt-J’s astonishing year was topped off when their debut album ‘An Awesome Wave’ won the coveted 2012 Mercury Prize and reached gold status.
The gig is especially exciting for Alt-J lead singer Joe, whose first festival was Leeds in 2002:
“It was great, although I wasn’t prepared at all. Took some Pot Noodles and about a tenner and that was it. I was struggling. The festival was amazing, though: Incubus, Hundred Reasons, The Hives, Foo Fighters, the Prodigy. I was having the time of my life.”
With the expansion of the Dance Stage into a standalone three-day tent keeping festival fans on their feet, Reading & Leeds are excited to announce Sub Focus as the first name for the all-new BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage. His ground breaking live show is a true spectacle, incorporating some of the most developed technology used today, including epic visuals displayed on a bespoke circular LED video installation and hypnotic lighting sequences.
With the first wave of artists revealed across the festival, Reading & Leeds Festival 2013 is already shaping up to be one amazing weekend, with much more still to come. The festivals have always been synonymous with incredible headliners, with The Cure, Kasabian and The Foo Fighters topping the bill at Reading this year, but also the way in which they play an important role for emerging artists, a trait common with all festivals on the circuit.
"This festival has played host to a number of now legendary performances including Nirvana’s appearance in 1992 and Them Crooked Vultures’ surprise set in 2009. Even as far back as 1972, The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood played a show with The Faces at Reading, his first ever festival appearance of any note. Proof, if needed, that the festivals really are the stuff of music legend".
The festivals have also always supported a wide range of upcoming and established urban music across rap, hip-hop and grime, having welcomed cutting-edge artists such as Azealia Banks, Odd Future and pioneers of grime Dizzee Rascal and Wiley over the past few years. During the last decade grime has crossed over from the backstreets of South and East London to huge stadium shows, with artists taking their music to a wider audience and playing to festival crowds at Reading & Leeds.
Melvin Benn explains the importance of this new stage:
“The addition of this stage is as exciting as anything we’ve ever done at Reading & Leeds. It is something that’s been developing in my head for some time and, after discussion, it has now become a reality as the BBC Radio 1Xtra Stage. This stage will absolutely hit you straight between the eyes with the best of UK hip-hop and grime, with some US acts in the line-up too. I’m delighted to be working with BBC Radio 1Xtra on it and also with promoter We-Represent”.
The dance offering at Reading & Leeds has always been popular too, with fans taking time away from all the rock ‘n’ roll and indie and really letting go. Over the years Reading & Leeds’ Dance Stage has witnessed performances from the likes of Katy B, Deadmau5 and Chase & Status, who have all had the tent packed to the rafters.
With a rich history spanning over four decades, Reading Festival and its younger sister event Leeds Festival remain as one of the pinnacles on the festival calendar.

Introducing: Knox
This morning we would like to introduce you to Knox, a new brother/sister duo who's EP entitled "Here" is out this week on Last Night on Earth.
We have also been lavished with a really cool live video of "HERE", which we think you should watch. Fans of Knox include Spin, The 405, Rob da Bank, Mixmag and most recently, us, the team at NOCTIS.
Underneath drones of melodic modernity and deep baselines, this EP from is a rich blend of intricate nuances and ethereal vocals. Electronica at its best.

The "Here" EP on Sasha's imprint Last Night on Earth, features 3 original tracks, including two remixes from John Tejada and Kuxxan-Suum. "Here" will no doubt appeal to the masses, though the foundation is firmly set in electronica, there are dashes of dubstep, completing the subtle yet powerful noise that is KNOX.
The John Tejada remix is purely for the dance-floor and is a "sonically luscious housetrack". Whereas"Fault" is more of a stripped back, rocktronic number which would sit perfectly amongst the likes of The XX, Portishead and Massive Attack.

Lastly, "Mornings" is as hypnotic as a lullaby. It's a sweet song, where the delicate vocals of Eliza continue. Stunning. To round off the EP, the brother/sister have enlisted the "galactic" Kuxxan SUUM to remix "Here", it gives the EP a wicked array of scratchy beats and bleeps.

The Lumineers
"Twenty years ago, Wesley Schultz saw the future.
Back then, growing up in the New York City suburb of Ramsey, New Jersey, Wesley spent his days drawing side by side with his best friend, Josh Fraites. Today, as bandleader of The Lumineers, Wesley’s replaced his pencil with a guitar, his drawings with songs, and plays side by side with Joshua’s younger brother Jeremiah. He still practices a lot, and it still turns out good".
Born form sorrow, powered by passion and ripened by hard work, The Lumineers have defined their sound when the world needs it the most, and they have already started attracting devout fans across the globe.
At the time of writing, "Ho Hey", their beautifully written song to which the official video is below, has already racked 17,539,438 views.
Embedded in America's deep South and combined with flavours of Americana, The Lumineers perfect front-porch folk and acoustic rock.
From Brooklyn, via Denver, the enigmatic trio boast spine tingling emotive sounds and a live performance second to none. Their raw energy and musicianship saw their rise to fame in the US this year and are becoming an unstoppable force.
Signed to a small independent Nashville label ‘Dualtone’ they’ve become one of the biggest US DIY success stories of the year.

One to Watch: Death At Sea
We want to present you with new noise from Liverpool, destined to make guitars cool again.
As if we'd believe they ever went out of fashion...
Without further adieu, we, like PURPLE PR, think of Death At Sea as a dizzy concoction of Sonic Youth, The Strokes and Pavement.
"Death At Sea are the place where coruscating noise meets haunting pop melody and brutal lyrical honesty"
Nonetheless we can see a bright future ahead, and though their debut single "Drag" was played on Made in Chelsea earlier this week, we can't hold that against them.

Fake Club - Do What You Gotta Do
“I’LL LOVE YOU ‘TIL I LEAVE YOU.”
FAKE CLUB are the antithesis to a modern brand of music.
"Their music will make you tingle in places that were left behind when rock n roll was a lifestyle. To the accidental tourist they are the Spice Girls with instruments. To their peers they are a threat."
But alas, to the general public they are their new favourite band. Created from a society obsessed with fakeness and an augmented reality, FAKE CLUB take attitude and turn it on its head, mocking and feeding from negative associations.
They are set to create a refreshing culture of their own.
